The Call of the Open Road

For most of my life, I've expressed myself inwardly. My approach to social media and "putting myself out there," has been philosophically similar to cultures that believe "exposing yourself" through pictures and images "damage your soul." Pythagoras held that the soul was of divine origin and existed before and after death. Plato and Socrates also accepted the immortality of the soul, while Aristotle considered only part of the soul, the noûs, or intellect, to have that quality. Epicurus believed that both body and soul ended at death. Several indigenous cultures, particularly those in parts of Africa and Oceania, have historically believed that photographs can capture or steal a part of a person's soul or spirit. This belief stems from the idea that an image or representation of an individual is intrinsically linked to their essence or life force. Some specific examples include the Navajo people of the American Southwest, who traditionally avoided being photographed as they believed it could lead to illness or misfortune. Similarly, the Trobriand Islanders of Papua New Guinea were reluctant to be photographed, fearing it could diminish their personal power or mystical qualities.

The Himba people of Namibia also hold the belief that photographs can trap a person's spiritual energy. They would often cover their faces or turn away when being photographed to prevent this from happening. This cultural perspective on the profound connection between an image and one's inner self is rooted in non-Western worldviews that see the material and immaterial worlds as intricately intertwined. Camera's and other electronic devices have been viewed with suspicion and caution by these communities, who sought to protect their spiritual integrity from the perceived threat of photographic capture. For the first time in my life, I'm stepping outside that belief system. Not that I haven't expressed myself through social media in the past, the exposure has been consistently temporary, and my internal rationalization of this was that if my exposure is temporary, then the capture of parts of my soul could never be permanent. So why the change now? Well, major life changes create major philosophical fissures. I'm at a point in my life where I want to "capture my soul," through art, expression, creative outlets (like a blog! <-- say this like you would say "Like A Boss!" haha). So here's to expression, capturing the soul, and new beginnings.

There’s a special kind of excitement that comes with embarking on a journey without a clear end in sight. For me, that journey begins in Europe, a continent rich with history, culture, and endless possibilities. This isn’t just a vacation; it’s the start of a new chapter in my life. One filled with the thrill of discovery, the warmth of new friendships, and the possibility of finding a place to call home—perhaps in the sun-drenched landscapes of Italy.

The First Steps: Arriving in Europe

As I anticipate stepping off the plane, my thoughts brim with a sense of freedom and possibility. I anticipate walking down cobblestone streets, bustling markets, and historic landmarks whispering stories of centuries past (I'm a huge history nerd). It’s difficult not to feel a deep connection to the places I’ve read about in books or seen in movies. Now, they are no longer distant dreams but part of my future reality.

The first few days in Europe will surely be a whirlwind of emotions. There’s the anticipated joy of tasting fresh croissants in Paris, the awe of standing before the grand cathedrals of Spain, and the serenity of a quiet morning walk along the canals in Amsterdam. Yet, amidst all the excitement, there’s a part of me that’s searching for something more—a place where I can put down roots and create a life that feels authentically mine.

The Italian Dream: A Potential New Home

Italy has always held a special place in my heart. The idea of living in a country where passion permeates every aspect of life—from the food to the art, to the very way people greet one another—fills me with a sense of belonging even before I arrive. I've been learning Italian (going full send on this one).

As I explore different regions, I can’t help but imagine what it would be like to wake up every day to the scent of freshly brewed espresso, to take leisurely walks through olive groves, and to immerse myself in a culture that values slow living and deep connections. Whether it’s the rolling hills of Tuscany, the charming villages along the Amalfi Coast, or the vibrant streets of Rome, each place seems to offer a unique slice of the Italian dream.

But finding a new home isn’t just about the location—it’s about the community. I’m looking forward to meeting locals, understanding their way of life, and perhaps even learning to speak Italian fluently. There’s a beautiful simplicity in the way Italians live, and I’m eager to see how I can incorporate that into my own life.

Enjoying Life’s New Experiences

Beyond the search for a new home, this journey is about embracing life’s new experiences. It’s about saying yes to opportunities that challenge me, whether it’s trying a dish I’ve never heard of, getting lost in a city where I don’t speak the language, or making friends with people from different walks of life.

Every day is an adventure, and I’m learning to find joy in the little things—like the feel of the sun on my face as I sip wine in a vineyard, the laughter shared over a meal with strangers who quickly become friends, and the quiet moments of reflection as I watch the sunset over the Mediterranean.

Conclusion: The Journey Ahead

As I continue my travels, I’m reminded that this journey is about more than just finding a new home—it’s about discovering myself and releasing parts of my soul like global breadcrumbs along the way. Europe, with its rich tapestry of cultures and landscapes, is the perfect backdrop for this adventure. And while Italy might become my new home, I’m open to wherever the road may unexpectedly lead.

Here’s to the start of a beautiful journey, filled with new experiences, lasting memories, and perhaps, the discovery of a new land I can call home.
